Current projects

As well as its regular work of supporting churches together groups and local ecumenical partnerships across its area, Churches Together in South London is focussing on particular projects during 2009:

Relations with black majority and other independent churches

The growth and vitality of independent, mainly Pentecostal, churches from Caribbean, African, Latin American and  Asian backgrounds, and more recently from mainland Europe, is one of the most significant aspects of church life in South London. CTSL is committed to working closely with these churches with a view to greater understanding and effective partnership in mission.

Ecumenical initiatives in mission

There are inter-church initiatives in mission across South London including for example street pastor schemes, schools worker projects, prayer days and Pentecost celebrations.  These represent what is sometimes called `new ecumenism', a Spirit-led movement among all kinds of churches.   CTSL supports these initiatives by sharing information about them and encouraging others to learn from them.  It also makes modest financial grants to groups wishing to take steps together.

Advocating ecumenism

For many, ecumenism is an optional extra; for others, it seems as though there has been little progress in recent years. CTSL is concerned to remind churches of the imperative to seek unity and to re-kindle enthusiasm for the ecumenical vision – churches working together to present one Gospel to the world.
